Sarıkız
is the only good-hearted,beautiful daughter of a shepherd named Cilbak
Baba. Although every young man in the village wants to marry her, Sarıkız
refuses their proposals for she cannot meet anyone she may love. So when
her fathers goes on a pilgrimage to Mecca some gossip roam around among
the villagers about Sarıkız though innocent. When Cilbak Baba arrives back home, having diturbed by the insulting eyes of the villagers, he decides to kill Sarıkız, in disgrace. He takes his daugther to the top of a hill, together with her geese. There, Cilbak Baba asks for some water from his daughter but she brings salty water. "You wanted it so immediately that I had to bring it from the sea." she replies when her father gets annoyed. He orders his daugter once more. This time, she doesn't leave the scene but by magic she serves sweet water immediately. Her father gets shocked. Cilbak Baba gives up killing his daughter concluding that Sarıkız is a holy personality. Cilbak Baba is so ashamed of himself that he leaves his doughter on the top of the hill. Right at this moment in the mountains heavy clouds appear over their heads. A few hours later, after the clouds apart, shepherds from other villages find their dead bodies on the peaks of two different hills. Today the place is named "Sarıkız Tepesi" : The Sarıkız Hill. |
